Nixon in China, Hu in America

Nixon in China, Hu in America
Join theatrical director Peter Sellars and Orville Schell, Director of Asia Society's Center on US-China Relations, as they discuss the past, present and future of US-China relations as well as the role of culture in this constantly evolving relationship.

On February 2, Sellars makes his Metropolitan Opera debut with the groundbreaking work, John Adams's Nixon in China. According to Sellars, this exploration of President Nixon's historic 1972 encounter with Mao and Communist China "shows you what opera can do to history, which is to deepen it and move into its more subtle, nuanced, and mysterious corners."

The Metropolitan Opera's production of Nixon in China will be shown "Live in HD" in movie theaters internationally on Saturday, February 12. The production was originally created by English National Opera. The work was commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Houston Grand Opera, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Imagined Worlds, Plausible Futures

Imagined Worlds, Plausible Futures
On November 30th and December 1st, 2010, at the TIME Conference Center in New York City, many of the most innovative people and organizations in the science and technology world came together for an historic gathering - the 2010 World Technology Summit & Awards, the eighth Summit and ninth Awards thus far! - to celebrate each other's accomplishments; to explore what is imminent, possible, and important in and around emerging technologies; and to create the kinds of serendipitous relationships that create the future.

The majority of Summit participants were either current WTN members (primarily winners/finalists from previous World Technology Awards cycles, as selected by their peers as those doing the innovative work of "the greatest likely long-term significance") or 2010 World Technology Award nominees. A combination of keynote talks, panel discussions, and breakout sessions... and potentially-career-altering-networking opportunities over two days concluded with a gala black-tie Awards ceremony on the second night.

The 75th Anniversary of Porgy and Bess

The 75th Anniversary of Porgy and Bess
A Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the opera Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin. Highlights of the opera will be performed by stars of some of the world's premiere opera companies, interspersed with narration of the story, by actor Avery Brooks. Featuring Terry Cook, bass baritone; Indira Mahajan, soprano; Lawrence Craig, and others.

Conceived by Gershwin as an "American folk opera," Porgy and Bess premiered in New York in the fall of 1935 and featured a cast of classically trained African-American singers -- a daring and visionary artistic choice at the time. Incorporating a wealth of blues and jazz idioms into the classical art form of opera, Gershwin considered it his finest work.

Stones Guitarist Keith Richards Talks About 'Life'

Stones Guitarist Keith Richards Talks About 'Life'
"When you are growing up there are two institutional places that affect you most powerfully: the church which belongs to God, and the public library, which belongs to you. The public library is the great equalizer." -- Keith Richards

Outlaw, hellraiser, and one of rock music's most gifted and influential guitarists, Keith Richards has forged a life that most of us can only imagine--and often envy. Amazingly he's lived to tell about it, and now this rock Icon has given us the definitive rock autobiography.

In Life, the man himself tells about life lived fast and hard in the creative hurricane--from his days as a young boy growing up in a council estate, listening obsessively to Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records, to joining forces with Mick Jagger and Brian Jones to form The Rolling Stones.

With characteristic honesty, he reveals all the highs and lows of rock 'n' roll, from the meteoric rise to fame and the notorious drug busts to the women, drinking, and heroin addiction that made him infamous.

In conversation with Anthony DeCurtis, a music journalist, and contributing editor for Rolling Stone, Keith Richards will discuss the storied journey of the Rolling Stones, as well as his passion for books and for history. He will chronicle how he created the revolutionary, high-octane riffs that defined "Jumping Jack Flash," "Gimme Shelter" and "Honky Tonk Woman," his affair with the equally infamous Anita Pallenberg (the mother of three of his children), and the tragic death of Brian Jones. He will also discuss the personal values that have made him a proud, successful father, and a happily married man for more than twenty-five years.

From falling in love with his wife Patti Hansen to his relationship with his "brother," Mick Jagger, we follow Keef on the ultimate road trip we have all longed to know more about-- the story of an unfettered, fearless, on-the-edge life lived to the absolute fullest.

Decoded: Jay-Z in Conversation with Cornel West
Fiercely candid, uncompromising, provocative, inspiring -- Decoded is the long awaited first book by the multi-platinum, 10 time Grammy Award winning artist, entrepreneur, and icon JAY-Z.

At the New York Public Library, JAY-Z will share his thoughts on growing up as a hustler and feeling judged simply because of where he was from. He will also address issues that informed him and his songwriting:

How did visual art and poetry influence his craft?
How did he get involved in politics when he never really trusted the system?
How did he stay honest to himself in the world of big business and how did he shed stereotypes when he'd been labeled one all his life?
