Richard J. Evans: Empire - From Conquest To Control

Richard J. Evans: Empire - From Conquest To Control

From the 1880s through to the First World War, European empires slowly imposed their control on the territories that in many cases existed merely on paper. This lecture asks how and why European powers embarked on this trajectory. Often, occupation became effective through a long series of colonial wars and conflicts. Sometimes, as in the case of the German war against the Herero in South-west Africa in 1905-06, imperial violence reached genocidal proportions. In others, as in the British wars with the Maori in New Zealand, or the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1896, the colonizing power was unable to impose full control or was even repulsed by military defeat. Different varieties of colony emerged, ranging from those where European settlement overwhelmed indigenous societies, as in Australia, to those where a small number of European traders, missionaries and administrators attempted to rule a vastly greater number of indigenous inhabitants, as in India or the colonies of West Africa.

Jack Mahoney: Christianity in Evolution - An Exploration

Evolution has provided a new understanding of reality, with revolutionary consequences for traditional Christian beliefs. What should a rational Christian think of issues such as Adam and Eve or Original Sin which appear to be at odds to modern thinking on evolution?

Cognitive Robotics and Artificial Intelligence

Cognitive Robotics and Artificial Intelligence
Join an audience at swissnex San Francisco as scientists from Switzerland and the US discuss their research on humanoid robots, cognitive robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI). Hear how some robots self-reflect, self-improve, and adapt to new circumstances, and whether its possible for robots of the future to possess the same cognitive characteristics as humans.

Cornell Universitys Hod Lipson is seeking to understand if machines can learn analytical laws automatically. For centuries, scientists have attempted to identify and document analytical laws underlying physical phenomena in nature. Despite the prevalence of computing power, the process of finding natural laws and their corresponding equations has resisted automation. Lipson has developed machines that take in information about their environment and discover natural laws all on their own, even learning to walk.

Rolf Pfeifer directs the Artificial Intelligence Lab at the University of Zurich. Together with his scientific assistant Pascal Kaufmann, Pfeifer presents current AI research and a humanoid robot in the Ecce family referred to as Cronos.

Standard humanoid robots mimic the human form but they generally function quite differentlyand their characteristics reflect this. This places severe limitations on the kinds of interactions robots can engage in, on the knowledge they can acquire about their environment, and on the nature of their cognitive engagement. Instead of copying only the outward form of a human, Cronos mimics the inner structures as wellbones, joints, muscles, and tendonsand thus has more human-like actions and interactions in the world.

Carolin Crawford: The Sounds Of The Universe

Carolin Crawford: The Sounds Of The Universe

In space no-one can hear you scream... but it is still a noisy Universe. We are familiar with the many stunning images of space, but these are only part of the whole human experience. This lecture takes a new approach to appreciating the Universe, through the vehicle of sound. Once we understand how sound is propagated, we can look at the how and where it can exist in space. We examine how sound can be a diagnostic of cosmic phenomena (such as the song of the Sun and distant stars), the way it can carry energy across vast volumes of space (away from a black hole humming in B), how it can be a useful way to illustrate processes in astronomy (such as the rapid spin of pulsars, and other more local radio emissions) and how it is ultimately responsible for the growth of all structure we see today in the cosmos.

The Price of Fish: Making Sense of Real World Economics

The Price of Fish: Making Sense of Real World Economics

The Price of Fishaddresses issues related to 'real' (as opposed to 'transactional') commerce: the complex ways in which people, organisations and societies communicate and deal with each other. The book argues that real commerce drives society, politics, the economy and our future, including the ways complex interactions adapt and change over time. The aim of the book is to make sense of the way the world really works beyond economics. This event is a book launch to mark the publication ofThe Price of Fish: A New Approach to Wicked Economics and Better Decisions.

John Elkington: Beyond Bubbles - Riding the Change Waves

John Elkington: Beyond Bubbles - Riding the Change Waves

Is sustainability investment missed by our focussing on market bubbles in current economical and financial discussions?

Sustainability calls for timescales far beyond the scope of market bubbles, working in tens or even hundreds of years, in contrast to the increasingly fast pace of market volatility. Does this mean that it is immune to market bubbles, or is it doomed to be hindered by many collapses of the market before any investments are able to come to fruition? Are there fundamental market factors that can drive sustainability investment (and return) regardless to the bubbles?
